The 40th Anniversary of

the Program in American Studies

May 9-10, 2014

Dear Friends and Alumni,

Whether you remember it as American Culture, or know it as American Studies, WE WANT YOU! Join us May 8th - 10th, 2014 for a three-day event that doubles as our 40th Anniversary and a retirement party for our beloved Carl Smith. Bring your nostalgia, we'll bring the refreshments.

Please join us in celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Program in American Studies at Northwestern on Friday, May 9th and Saturday, May 10th, 2014.

Beginning in 1974 with the name American Culture, the Program has taken a panoramic, interdisciplinary approach to the study of America, attracting from its very inception some of the best students in Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. This tradition has extended year after year to the present moment.

We hope this celebration shines with a similar radiant conviviality to the one held some years ago for the 25th Anniversary of the Program! We are currently planning events for the two-day celebration which will include panels with alumni across the years and faculty-led tours of Chicago. Fond reminisces and jovial toasts will abound! Old friendships rekindled and new ones forged!

We hope that you will accept our warm invitation to commemorate an important milestone for the Program, a commemoration which is equally a celebration of your own time as a major as well as what all of our alumni have done collectively to make it the most exemplary model of undergraduate education at the University.

The 40th Anniversary celebration will fall immediately after the May 8th, 2014 retirement party for Professor Carl Smith, one of the original architects of the Program and a much beloved teacher and scholar in American Studies, English, and History.

As you make plans, please visit the Travel page for complete information on how to make reservations with the group rates we have secured at two nearby hotels. The Community page also describes how you can connect with fellow alumni, contribute to our ever-growing photo archive, and stay updated online.

Let me wish you a warm winter and heartfelt wishes that we will see you in Evanston this Spring.

In anticipation,

Ivy Wilson
Director, Program in American Studies
